No, I have never biked in the snow. But I have sunk my limbs in about three feet of snow when I was in Medford, Oregon one winter (1995?) when my cousin and her husband invited me to go up the mountain to get a Christmas tree. It was so beautiful, seeing half the mountain covered with pristine white snow.

Many Filipinos dream of going to the US, Canada or the UK, and with that is the expectation to experience what we call “white Christmas”. This means seeing snow for the first time and during Christmas at that. From what I could recall, the first snowfall I saw was in Madrid, Spain (1986?), though the exact date or circumstance escape me now. I remember having a peaceful feeling then as I see snow falling, some small, others larger than my fingers. This is somewhat unforgetable for me because here in our country we don’t have snow of course. But more than that, it is because of what I felt.

When it rains hard here, you cannot even hear yourself think. The drumming of the rain against the corrugated roof of most houses drowns out any other noise. It is all you can hear, like in the cliche, it’s raining cats and dogs. It is totally unlike a snowfall, where in spite of what you are seeing, almost no sound is produced. In a rainfall, even the tiniest drop clumped together with others, can create deafening noise.

It seems useless to say that it would be impossible to bike in the snow. But indeed, it would be impossible for me to do so. I guess there would be others who could, or would try. It might be fun, for a while. Yet, when snow starts to melt, then it wouldn’t be fun at all.

In the Philippines though, you can bike almost all year round, yes even if it is raining, or should I say, even if there is a typhoon raging above and around you. I wouldn’t encourage it though, but if it is fun and adventure you seek, then go ahead. Just look out for some flying corrugated iron sheet that just detached itself from somebody’s house. Hard but it is possible. And yes, I have tried it.

I rode in the snow once last year. When I started out it was cold but it wasn’t snowing. About two miles into the ride it started snowing hard enough that seeing was problematic.

The snow was short lived — it didn’t come down for more than a couple of minutes, and it was windy enough that it didn’t have a chance to stick to the road … but it was kind of neat.
