post Category: chainring, doctor, fun ride — pixelus @ 1:32 pm — post

I haven’t had the chance to go back to the Marikina bike path. I wanted to go back and take some pictures to post here. Perhaps some other time.

I resumed my bike to work routine today. I estimate the time it took me to arrive at work from my home as around 45 minutes or more. I had a cyclocomputer installed in my bike before but I lost it months ago when I went to Maarat, and since I don’t like to have any gadgets on my person, I don’t even have a cellphone right now, I had no way of correctly reckoning the time. But I know that going by the usual pace of around 12 to 15 kmh, it usually takes me 25-30 minutes.

The reason for this longer journey is because I deliberately pedaled slowly so as not to tax my heart too much. I remember the doctor’s admonition not to over do it and how I felt the first time I biked after taking the new medicine. So in order not to succumb to the temptation of going over this personal limit I am imposing on myself, I had previously removed the largest chainring from the bike. In effect, what used to be a 24 speed bike is now only 16 speed. And to further ensure that I don’t exert too much effort, I only set my rear gear shifter up to 6 instead of going the full speed of 8, pedaling on level ground. Only for moderate downhill runs do I go up to 8, because this gives me more control of the bike.

Another practice that I decided not to do today at the office is to take a shower after a short rest. I was assured by a nurse friend that taking a shower after biking doesn’t do any harm at all. I believe him and it is actually what I have been doing for a long time. But today, I just wanted to change my routine a bit. No shower, but of course I have to clean my self and I did it by wiping my upper body with a wet face towel. With a fresh change of underwear and my work clothes, I was ready for work in no time at all.

As I go about the night’s work, I am also thinking about what I have to go through going back home on the bike. Right now, I am actually apprehensive. Will I suffer the same exhaustion I experienced before or not?. I certainly hope I won’t.

But I will not let this thought discourage me now.

It is really our own choice, whether we do something for ourselves or others, good or bad, for the environment or the world at large. Tama ka that it is how we try to implement those changes that we want. Like now, I don’t want to be discouraged by the thought that I may not be able to finish the ride home without getting too exhausted. Kailangan e, and if I let this thought bother me, lalong wala akong mararating, there would be no changes, no improvement, no nothing for me. Thanks for the comment, Vera.

    hey,

i have this superstitious belief na namana ko pa sa aking kanuno nunuan hahahah–its about not wetting any part of your body kapag katatapos mo pa lang sa isang vigorous exercise- work out or body building…kasi daw napapasma ang mga ugat natin kaya in the end pag matagal na ay nababaldado na or napaparalisado if not nananakit mga kasu kasuan.hindi kaya dahil sa pagbabagong ginawa ko mula ng mapasok ako sa monasteryo- na sa halip na nagpapahinga muna ako after doin my workouts ay agad ako shower sa banyo? hindi kaya ito ang dahilan kunng bakit nagkarun ako ng chronic na tendenitis? …..sana naman wag!…or sadyang tumatanda na ako kaya may mga arthritis sort of na mga nararamdaman ang kasu kasuan ko sa tuhod at elbows?… Keep going with your regimen..they help you so much!…

Yun din ang akala ko noon, dom osb, na kapag nabasa ng tubig ang katawan mo pagkatapos pawisan e mapapasma ka. According to my nurse friend, hindi daw totoo yon. We discussed this during one of our seminars about biking injuries and first aid. Sabi nya, pwede naman daw maligo after a work out or in our case, after biking kahit pinawisan. So far I have not experienced any ill effects ng paliligo after biking, even without resting or pahinga ba kahit konti. Sometimes I do rest after a rigorous biking trip, pero ang dahilan ko kasi, with the high temperature ng katawan ko, it still continues to burn calories kahit na at rest na ako. And perhaps you are right, kung ano man ang nararamdaman natin na medyo alanganin sa katawan natin, it could be brought about by age, LOL….

Well, age it is, but a young mindset could certainly offset such an aging body. A fresh look at old things around us could bring a surge of new blood on those aging veins and rejuvenate our bodies. Exercise and good food equals a better mind and body combination. Let’s keep it up! Praying and working together…
