How do you define success? Does it involve accomplishing all the goals you have set up for yourself before engaging in an activity? Is success the end all and be all of any event you find your self in? If this is so, then I had a major failure last Saturday, May 19.

The PMTB forum announced a ride for that weekend, a trail ride going to Licao-licao in Montalban, passing through a place called Nabutas (literally, “where a hole is made”). I thought this would be a great opportunity to test my new 8- inch disk brake rotor, for there’s bound to be plenty of downhill rides. So texted my bike buddies to tell them I would be joining the ride. We made an appointment to meet at 6:30 am at the usual place, and be with the main group in San Mateo at 7:00 am.

This ride was organized at the request of a PMTB member who had just arrive from the USA and wanted to experience once again the camaraderie of the local bikers in an exciting trail ride. After the usual greetings and picture taking, the group went off at around 7:00 am, the agreed take-off time.

licaolicao-5.JPGThe first stop was at an intersection about 3 kilometers ahead, just before the first major uphill climb. I thought the pace was fast, going at about 20 kph. I am more used to 12-15 kph pace. But still being fresh and just starting the ride, it was a breeze.

We regrouped at this point and after about 15 minutes of rest, we proceeded uphill. We turned right after about 300 meters to what is the beginning of the trail. It started as a gentle slope, the unpaved road was forgiving enough on my slick tires.

licaolicao-12.JPGAnd then, the first of several uphill climbs on the trail, came upon us. Unable to continue after a few slow struggling pedal strokes, I had to dismount finally, and walk all the way to the top. I found the leaders of the group already rested and ready to pedal again, while I still have to catch my breath in order to continue.

More stories and pictures to come.
